Corumbiara

Tonight’s film comes from Brazil.

Corumbiara (2009)

Whether you’re learning Portuguese or just looking for something to watch, Corumbiara is an important film.

The film is about the Corumbiara massacre, and the twenty year search for survivors. Ranchers and loggers have repeatedly committed such violence against the indigenous peoples of Brazil and the Amazon.

Though Brazil’s indigenous peoples have come under renewed attack from the regime of Jair Bolsonaro, there are plenty of people pouring their time into fighting for these communities and their languages.

Socio Ambiental has recently published a video and ebook about the Yanomami languages, spoken by the Yanomami people in lands that stretch north and south of the border between Brazil and Venezuela. It’s also worth watching Maracá, a series produced by APIB, focusing on the threats faced by the indigenous peoples of Brazil.

The following is a video about Brazil’s indigenous cultures, discussed by Anápuàka Tupinambá, founder and creator of Rádio Yandê, who also have accounts on Facebook and Twitter.

The work of Kaká Werá Jecupé is also worth reading, particularly A terra dos mil povos : História Indígena do Brasil contada por um índio.

It’s also worth following the causes of indigenous leaders and activists :
